Taxes on Video Games

The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) is opposed to tax legislation that would unconstitutionally target video games by unduly burdening gamers. ECA believes that such taxes would stifle trade and disproportionately impact generations X and Y, who are increasingly becoming more politically aware and vocal.

Unfortunately, state legislators in Wisconsin have introduced a video game tax bill that would add a 1% video game "sin tax" on top of their state’s existing sales tax, putting video games in the same league as alcohol and tobacco products. This bill would disproportionately impact gamers in Wisconsin, and is unconstitutional as drafted.
